“From ‘Hide’ to Hibiscus” A biography of Joseph A. And Linda M. Helisek
|
While acknowledging that God creates the most perfect flowers, Linda M.
Helisek has developed hundreds of varieties of leather flowers in the past
twenty years. For the past ten years she has enjoyed creating 100% leather
wall sculptures as well as whimsical and seasonal jewelry, a “new look” for
their business, Lin Marie Originals, LLC.
On September 12, 2004, Joseph and Linda were co-named “Artist - Crafter
of the Year” by the Yankee Peddler Foundation. Self-taught artists, these
Monroe, Michigan residents have won numerous ribbons, awards and
honorariums for their artwork.
The Heliseks, in reply to receiving these awards said, “We are truly grateful to
all the art associations who have so graciously bestowed these honors to us,
but our heartfelt thanks goes to our heavenly Father, who has blessed us with
our gifts and talents. To Him be the glory and praise! We truly believe that
we are created by Him and blessed with special gifts, and we are to do
whatever He has called us to do with all our might, to the best of our abilities."
Joe’s past experience at Ford Motor Engineering has proved to be a big asset
in the creation their designs and displays. Now, the pair travel to top-notch
shows throughout the Midwest and Northeast states.
Joe and Linda’s artwork is featured at the world-renown, posh Greenbrier Hotel
(in White Sulphur Springs, WV, which hosts Heads of State and dignitaries
from foreign lands). Their work is sold in the Greenbrier Artist Colony, which
sells only original works of whom they call, “America’s finest craftsmen.” In
2004, the Heliseks’ leather sculptures became the new artwork carried at
Elephant Walk Gallery Shops (thirteen galleries throughout the Hawaiian
islands). Much to their delight, Joe & Linda's artwork has been
commissioned by two First Ladies, Nancy Reagan and Hillary Clinton,
while their husbands served as our Presidents.
Linda begins by studying real flowers in order to capture intimate botanical
details. Her background as a dressmaker/patternmaker helps her develop her
designs. Each piece, cut from natural-colored English calfskin is hand-tooled
and hand-sculpted by Joe, making it Linda’s “three-dimensional canvas.” The
sculptures are then hand-painted by Linda, using her secret formula of leather
dyes, and/or acrylic and oil paints. A fixative is then applied, insuring that their
artwork keeps its original color and shape allowing their customers to enjoy
their artwork for many, many years.
Because all of their designs are hand-made, EACH PIECE IS AN
ORIGINAL...No two pieces are exactly alike!
Although their leather jewelry art appears to be delicate, they have proven to
be durable traveling companions to customers throughout the United States,
Canada, Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean, Australia, England, Ireland,
France, Germany, Israel, Poland, Switzerland, China, Japan, Scotland, Saudi
Arabia, Morocco, Russia, Egypt, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Italy and
Czechoslovakia,
One can peek at their studio and see their leather sculpting process as well as
view over 600 current original designs in their line on their colorful website:
www.LeatherJewelry.com . The days are never long enough for all the
ideas that are brewing at the Helisek studio. The Heliseks’ vision is to
continually improve as the years pass, adding “fresh designs” often to their
repertoire and ... to brighten others’ lives with their artwork by giving them an
appreciation for one of life’s most precious blessings …FLOWERS!
"You'll look sooooooo pretty in our Grandma and Grandpa's Leather Jewelry!"
